The Two of Them

The two of them are thick as thieves, I tell you.  They are best buds.  You can't usually find one without the other these days!  I don't know if Claire just adores having a sibling so close in age or if it really is the fact that she feels a special bond with someone that is "like" her.  And yes, she notices.  She notices enough to talk about skin color and hair color and eye color.  A lot.  She notices that I have lighter skin and Asher's skin is the same as hers.  She notices that we have green or blue eyes and she has brown eyes.  So dark they are almost black.  Asher does too.  And she loves this about him.  She is the kind of child that really needed to have someone of the same ethnicity in the family.  We didn't know that about her when we left China with her, but I'm sure glad we felt the need to add Asher to the family!

She also loves that she is older than him.  And she loves that he is just the right age to want to play with her.  And boy do they!  Play, hug, fight, play some more.  Yes, daily....sometimes hourly, there is conflict.

But, it's normal sibling conflict and anything less would just not be right.  Because they are normal siblings.

If you didn't know, you would actually think they have lived together all their lives.

Not kidding.

Although she had been the baby in this house for almost three years, Claire is perfect big sister material! Just the right mix of boss/mother/ally.

Oh, the competition.  It is a mess!

If I tell Asher to make his bed, the first thing out of his mouth is "What about Claire?"

The next thing out of his mouth is "Why I make my bed all day?"  Which translates: Why do I have to make my bed every day??

But, that issue is for another day!

If I give Asher a complement, Claire is quick to ask if the same is true of her.  If I give Claire something, Asher will race to me to see if he can have it too.  He spent the first month of life here feeling slighted because Claire gets medicine every night and he doesn't!

It's that bad.

So bad that Asher felt the need to split his head open less than twenty-four hours after Claire had!  No!  It's not that bad.  But he did.  And she did.  And it was less than twenty-four hours apart.  Two emergency center visits involving copious amounts of dermabond on two heads in one family......you do that math.  Hurts my head.  Almost as much as it hurt theirs.

But, at the end of the day, they love each other to pieces!

Unless you count when Claire asked me if we could send him back today.

Um.................Yep, perfectly matched sister and brother, those two!
